Lachen is a small hill town in the North Sikkim district of Indian state of Sikkim. It is located at a distance of 107 km from Gangtok, the Capital of Sikkim. Lachen literally translates to ‘Big Pass’. It is famous for its annual yak race. Lush greenery of Himalayas, fluttering Buddhist flags, blue sky and white snow make it very colourful and beautiful. People are simple, sweet and friendly. Located at an altitude of 2693 m, Lachen’s beauty comes out in different shades during different seasons. Travellers visit Lachen in spring to witness the beauty of freshly bloomed rhododendrons, and to enjoy snow in winters.

Lachen Weather In March, April and May (Spring/ Summer)

Spring begins in Lachen in the month of March. The valleys get covered with Rhododendrons of beautiful colours making the most delightful sites for travellers. Spring is followed by Summer when the temperature is not very low and the weather is pleasant.

Lachen Weather In June, July, August and September (Monsoon)

The Monsoon season, much like most of Sikkim, begins in the month of June in Lachen and ends by September. Torrential rainfall is observed during the months of Monsoon in Lachen

Best Time To Visit Lachen

Lachen in March, April, May and June (Summer)

The weather of Lachen during the Summer months of March, April, May and June is quite pleasant. The temperature is not very low and rainfall is quite less. The village has fresh bloom of colourful and beautiful flowers like Rhododendrons, and it resonates with colours.

Lachen in October, November and December (Winter) 

The months of October, November and December are some of the best months to visit Lachen. The skies are clear and the mountain ranges are clearly visible. The village witnesses lot of snow fall which attracts many tourists from around the country.

Lachen Sightseeing

Chopta Valley 

Chopta Valley, at an altitude of 4023 m is one of the most scenic places that one must not miss on his trip to Lachen. The arrival of Spring carpets this remote valley with flowers with hues as diverse as the colours of the rainbow. The mountains around the valley are always covered with snow that comes down to meet the land of the valley in the months of Winter.

A trip to Sikkim is incomplete without visiting this beautiful high altitude lake. The lake, along with being pristine and beautiful, has religious significance too and its water is considered pious. The lake remains frozen for most part of the year. It is located 67 km away from Lachen via Gurudongmar Lake.

Yumthang Valley

Much like Chopta Valley, Yumthang is a natural paradise in its own. During Spring, Rhododendrons bloom aplenty to cover the entire valley in their glorious colours. In winter, the beauty of the valley becomes more pristine with white snow spread everywhere from mountains to lands. It is 72 km from Lachen via Lachen road.

Also called Ngodub Choling Monastery, the Lachen Monastery was built in the 19th century. It began in a small hut with only eight months, but its strength grew with time and the monastery was reconstructed in 1977  with help from the government.

Green Lake Trek

This beautiful trek is laden with colourful rhododendrons, blue poppies and primulas and goes between thick forests, making it one of the best and most sought after trek in Sikkim.   The trail takes you to the base camp of Kanchenjunga. The several waterfalls and birds on the hike make the trail even more mesmerising.  This beautiful trek starts in the beautiful Lachen.

Lachen doesn’t have a large number of hotels but it has all the variety in those limited numbers, from luxury to standard.  The Apple Orchard Resort is one of the most popular accommodations in the town.

How To Reach Lachen

By Road

To travel to Lachen by road, travellers need to arrive in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. From Gangtok, Lachen is 107 km from Gangtok via Gangtok- Chungthang Road. Taxis and buses are available from Gangtok till Lachen.

By Train

New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest railway station to Lachen. From New Jalpaiguri, Lachen is 195 km via NH31A and Lachen- Chungthang Road. New Jalpaiguri is well connected to other major Indian like Kolkata, New Delhi, etc.

By Air

The nearest airport to Lachen is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. Lachen is located 202 km away from Bagdogra Airport and can be reached via NH31A.
